'BE'ing of a Leader

There are two parts to the BEing of a leader.

The first is Who you are. The second is How you are.

It is the integration of these two parts that make up the being of a leader. When you know who you are and know what you believe, then saying what you believe becomes easier. It is easier because it is in alignment with who you are.

This is where the how you are part kicks in. How you are when you are saying what you believe has considerable impact on the audience.

People respond to who you are being and how you are being before they respond to what you say.

Similarly, How you are when you are doing the things that you said likewise lands the same way with your followers or potential followers.

People respond to who you are being and how you are being before they respond to what you do.

Who you are

The Ancient Greek Oracle was wise indeed. Their truth still holds today. The best way to know your future and in this case how to lead is to follow the saying at the entrance of the Oracle:

Know Thyself

Leadership starts with knowing yourself and what you believe. Because in order to do what you say and say what you believe. You have to start with what you believe.

The Leader is YOU!

How You Are:

Some Questions about how you are:

Are you present to the situation?

Are you in alignment with your beliefs?

Do you see your followers as people or objects?

Many books have been written on this subject, the best by far in our opinion is Leadership & Self-Deception by the Arbinger Institute.

Why is it important to know what you believe?

People respond to who you are being and how you are being before they respond to what you say or what you do.

Now people will follow what you say and do for a while, especially if they have to, until they realize that

  1. It doesn't align with what they sense
  2. They sense that you don't believe what you say
  3. They sense that you don't have any beliefs.

When they sense the disconnect they stop following and start resisting you.
